Aluminum and steel are the two most common metals for ornamental and security fencing. They can look almost identical once powder coated, but they behave very differently on site and over the life of the fence. This guide compares them so you can specify the right material, or offer the right one to your customers.
The short answer
Choose aluminum where corrosion, weight and low maintenance matter most: residential boundaries, pool barriers, coastal and humid sites, balconies and decks. Choose steel where strength and impact resistance come first: commercial and industrial perimeters, high-traffic public areas and security fencing.
Side-by-side comparison
| Aluminum fence | Steel fence | |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion | Does not rust; a scratch in the coating will not bleed red | Needs galvanizing plus powder coat; rust can start where the coating is damaged |
| Weight | About one third of the weight of steel | Heavy; more freight cost and harder handling |
| Strength | Strong enough for residential, pool and most commercial runs | Higher stiffness and impact resistance |
| Maintenance | Occasional washing | Inspect and touch up damaged coating |
| Typical uses | Gardens, pools, coastal sites, decks, privacy screens | Commercial, industrial, public and security perimeters |
Corrosion and coastal sites
Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer and does not rust, so it is the safer choice near the sea, around pools and in humid climates. Steel can perform well too, but only with proper galvanizing under the powder coat, and any damage to the coating needs attention. See our Nassau Cruise Port project for an example of aluminum fence in a harsh coastal setting.
Weight, freight and installation
Because aluminum is much lighter, more fence fits in a container and panels are easier for installers to carry and set. For importers and distributors this has a direct effect on landed cost per meter.
Strength and security
For perimeters where impact, climbing or forced entry is a concern, steel picket panels or welded mesh are usually the better fit. Our ornamental steel fence and welded mesh panels, supplied together with our group company Porçit, cover these projects.
Appearance
Both materials can be finished in the same powder coat colors and designs, from flat top to spear top. On a finished project most people cannot tell them apart. The real differences are in how the fence ages.
How Porfence can help
Porfence supplies both aluminum fence systems and steel fencing, so we can recommend the right material per project and quote panels, gates and posts together. Send us your project details for a coordinated quotation.
